ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
ABOUT
Since 1995, Slamdance has been recognized as a festival for discovering visionary first-time directors: Christopher Nolan (Following), Lynn Shelton (We Go Way Back), Bong Joon Ho (Barking Dogs Never Bite), Sean Baker (Take Out), Lena Dunham (Dealing), Behn Zeitlin (The Origins of Electricity), Ana Lily Amirpour (Six and A Half), and many more. The festival, established and programmed by filmmakers, is dedicated to emerging directors. Slamdance presents 30 features and 70 short films. Starting in 2025, the festival will no longer run concurrent to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City and will take place in Los Angeles.
The competition is reserved to first-time feature directors with a feature-length film produced with a budget under $1 million USD. BREAKOUTS is designed to serve directors beyond their first films who maintain distinct visual styles and a unique cinematic voice.
All genres of shorts are accepted, and all short film sections are qualifying categories for the Annual Academy Awards®.
Pilots and single episodes of any length, genre, and style are considered for the EPISODES section. The UNSTOPPABLE program is made by and/or about creators with visible and nonvisible disabilities. See details on the festival website.
DIG is a showcase of innovative digital, interactive, and gaming artworks.
Every year, a considerable number of Canadian features, shorts and episodes are selected, and several have won awards in recent years.
Telefilm Canada recognizes selection of a feature or a short film in the Festival for applications to its International Promotion Program.
