Twelve Canadian films to be screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival

08 June 2015

Montreal, June 8, 2015 – Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce that 12 Canadian films will be screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival from June 13 to 21, with a Canadian delegation attending. For the past six years, the Festival has honoured our talents by presenting films in a section especially reserved for Canada. This year, 10 films make up The Best of Canada section, while two others are found in the MIDA Documentary and Spectrum sections; all three are non-competitive.

On June 16, a press conference, to spotlight Canadian programming, will be held with Chinese media in conjunction with the launch of The Best of Canada section and the Asian premiere of Jeffrey St. Jules’ film Bang Bang Baby.

The Canadian delegation will be made up of Jeffrey St. Jules, director (Bang Bang Baby), Murray Foster, director (The Cocksure Lads Movie), Jeannette Garcia, associate producer (The Masters of Suspense) as well as Felipe Rodriguez, director, and Julia Blua, coproducer and editor who will present the world premiere of their film Kidnap Capital. These Canadians will participate in various activities organized by the Canadian Consulate General, such as a networking lunch with members of the Chinese film industry and a visit to the Shanghai-Vancouver Film School. The school, supported financially by the City of Shanghai, is the result of an association between the Vancouver Film School and Shanghai University and is a fine example of the collaboration between China and Canada. The initiative allows Chinese and Canadian students to participate in a one-year exchange.

The Shanghai International Film Festival, celebrating its 18th edition, is an excellent gateway to the Asian continent for the Canadian film industry. In 2014, 19 Canadian films were screened in various sections and in 2012, the film Pour l’amour de Dieu (For the Love of God), by Micheline Lanctôt, won the Grand Jury Prize.
