Telefilm Canada’s free screenings to celebrate Canadian Screen Awards Best Picture nominees to play to packed theatres

13 February 2015

Screenings of Christian Sparkes’ Cast No Shadow, Albert Shin’s In Her Place and Terrance Odette’s Fall sell out in just a few days

Montreal, February 13, 2015—All of Telefilm Canada’s upcoming free public screenings, of three homegrown lower budget films contending for this year’s Canadian Screen Awards (CSA) Best Motion Picture title, have sold out in just a few days.

“The demand for tickets to the free special screenings, where audiences will have a chance to meet some of the filmmakers and cast, was immediate”, said Telefilm Canada’s Director of National Promotion and Communications, Francesca Accinelli. ”In less than a day, ticket requests for Cast No Shadow exceeded the theatre’s 100-seat capacity. Requests to attend In Her Place and Fall quickly followed; both screenings will also have full houses of 100 excited movie-goers.”

“We want to encourage Canadians to get out to see the amazing work being created in Canada, and to show their support by watching Canadian nominated works in anticipation of the Canadian Screen Awards live broadcast on CBC on March 1st,” continued Accinelli. “The Canadian Screen Awards are produced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to celebrate Canadian films, television, and digital content. They honour our country’s actors, scriptwriters, directors and technical crew for their excellence. We want to help promote that talent.”

Cast No Shadow, is a first feature length film for St. John’s, Newfoundland director Christian Sparkes and co-producing team Chris Agoston and Allison White. The screening, co-presented with Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC), is a sneak preview for the lucky locals. Those who were’t able to get tickets can look forward to seeing the film in theatres, as plans for a theatrical release are in the works. The $250,000-budget film was financed by Telefilm’s Micro-Budget Production Program and NLFDC. Shot in and around St. John’s, Newfoundland the film took home six awards from the Atlantic Film Festival, two from the Edmonton International Film Festival, and has received four Canadian Screen Awards nominations.

The feature Fall, is about an aging Roman Catholic priest living contently at a Niagara Falls parish, who receives a letter forcing his complacent life into descent. The film was written and directed by Hamilton’s Terrance Odette (Saint Monica). The movie has garnered five CSA nominations and has a strong Canadian cast including starring roles by Suzanne Clément (Mommy), Wendy Crewson (Saving Hope), Katie Boland (Reign), Michael Murphy, and Cas Avnar.

Shot in Korea by Canadian emerging film director, Torontonian Albert Shin, In Her Place, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Jay Scott Prize at the 2015 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards. The film has been invited to attend film festivals around the globe and begins its theatrical release Ontario theatres this week.

This year’s CSA line-up for Best Motion Picture also includes Mommy (Xavier Dolan), Maps to the Stars (David Cronenberg), and Tu dors Nicole (Stéphane Lafleur).

Telefilm would like to give special thanks to the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, the Carlton Cinema, Agency 71 Inc. and Mongrel Media for their assistance in bringing these free screenings to the public.
