{"id":144905,"date":"2024-02-08T13:00:53","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T18:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/telefilm.ca\/?p=144905"},"modified":"2026-06-15T15:15:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T19:15:57","slug":"study-on-canadian-movie-consumption-exploring-the-health-of-feature-film-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/telefilm.ca\/en\/study-on-canadian-movie-consumption-exploring-the-health-of-feature-film-in-canada","title":{"rendered":"Study on Canadian Movie Consumption \u2013 Exploring the Health of Feature Film in Canada\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"editor-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telefilm Canada commissioned ERm Research<strong> <\/strong>to conduct a national study to explore the current state of feature film consumption, and segment movie consumers into groups to provide better insights into audience engagement opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the study <strong>Canadian Movie Consumption \u2013 Exploring the Health of Feature Film in Canada<\/strong>, ERm Research provides an understanding of overall consumption patterns, media sources used by audiences, their decision-making process, genre preferences, barriers to watching more movies, and their theatrical moviegoing habits, as well as perceptions of Canadian content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This research was fielded from September 17 to October 2, 2023, among 2,200 feature film consumers in Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Main takeaways:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;At high levels, <strong>95% of Canadians aged 18+ have seen one or more feature films in the past year<\/strong>, with nearly three-quarters seeing a movie in theatres.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The heaviest theatrical moviegoers also watch the most movies at home<\/strong>, but moderate moviegoers and non-moviegoers both still watch a lot of movies at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For many moviegoers, the <strong>shared theatrical experience fosters a sense of connection and excitement<\/strong> that enhances the way they engage with the movie. This pattern is more prevalent among fans of action, sci-fi and horror.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Theatrical moviegoing is a social affair<\/strong> with 46% of moviegoers typically attending in groups of three or more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Influencers have more clout with the young.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>French Canadian movie watchers are more inclined to see Canadian content theatrically<\/strong> and generally have a higher opinion of Canadian films.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-moviegoers like lower spectacle fare and are more likely to watch movies over broadcast TV.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paid streaming accounts for 54% of all feature film consumption.<\/strong> Around nine in ten movie consumers use at least one streaming service, with most accessing multiple.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full study report is <a
