Drunken Birds [Les oiseaux ivres]<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0which\u00a0<\/span>premiered at\u00a0the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0in the Platform\u00a0program<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>will be\u00a0released\u00a0on October<\/span>\u202f<\/span>15, 2021<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The film stars Jorge Antonio Guerrero, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Florent, Claude Legault, Marine Johnson, Maxime Dumontier, Amaryllis Tremblay, Karl Walcott, Yoshira\u00a0Esc\u00e1rrega, Gilberto Barraza, Normand\u00a0D<\/span>\u2019<\/span>Amour\u00a0and many others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So far,\u00a015<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>countries have submitted their entries for the best international film. Last year<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>93\u00a0countries submitted a film.<\/span>

Synopsis<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Willy\u2019s quest to find Marlena, his lost love, takes him from Mexico to Canada, where he is hired as a seasonal worker at the\u00a0B\u00e9cotte\u00a0farm near Montr\u00e9al. Several\u00a0fates\u00a0intertwine, worlds meet, tensions rise,\u00a0and moments of magical realism arise during the long\u00a0workdays.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About\u00a0Ivan\u00a0Grbovic\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ivan studied at Concordia University and the American Film Institute,\u00a0and began his career as a director of photography before becoming a director. He has directed several music videos for major artists as well as three internationally acclaimed short films:\u00a0<\/span>La t\u00eate haute<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(2006),\u00a0<\/span>La chute<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(2009) and\u00a0<\/span>Les mots<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(2009). His first feature film,\u00a0<\/span>Romeo Eleven<\/span><\/i>\u00a0[<\/span>Rom\u00e9o\u00a0Onze<\/span><\/i>]<\/span>\u00a0(2011),\u00a0won the prestigious Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film also won the Discovery Award at the Namur Film Festival. All his films have been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival.\u00a0<\/span>Drunken Birds<\/span><\/i>\u00a0[<\/span>Les\u00a0oiseaux\u00a0ivres<\/span><\/i>]<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>is his second feature film.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada in the Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film) category at the Oscars<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the history of the Oscars, eight Canadian films have been official nominees in the Best Foreign Language Film category: in 2013,\u00a0<\/span>Rebelle<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0by Kim Nguyen; in 2012,\u00a0<\/span>Monsieur\u00a0Lazhar<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0by Philippe Falardeau and\u00a0<\/span>In Darkness<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0by Agnieszka Holland (a minority coproduction with Poland and Germany); in 2011,\u00a0<\/span>Incendies<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0by Denis Villeneuve; and, in 2007,\u00a0<\/span>Water<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0by Deepa Mehta. The list also includes three films by Denys Arcand:\u00a0<\/span>Le\u00a0D\u00e9clin\u00a0de\u00a0l\u2019empire\u00a0am\u00e9ricain<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0in 1987,\u00a0<\/span>J\u00e9sus de Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0in 1990 and, in 2004,\u00a0<\/span>Les Invasions\u00a0barbares<\/span><\/i>, the only Canadian film to have won the Oscar in this category.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Selection process for the Best International Film category<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Telefilm Canada coordinates and chairs the pan-Canadian Selection Committee, without voting right. The committee comprises some 20 members representing key government agencies and national film industry associations. It is responsible for choosing the film that will represent Canada at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which accepts only one film per country for the Best International Feature Film category. Submitted films must have been produced outside the United States in a language other than English and must have been theatrically exhibited in the submitting country for at least seven consecutive days between\u00a0January 1,\u00a02021,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>December 31, 2021<\/span>. A shortlist of 10 films will be unveiled on\u00a0December 21, 2021, and the chosen five official nominees will be announced on\u00a0February\u202f8, 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
