About
Launched in 1979 with the goal to show non-mainstream films to a broader audience, the Göteborg Festival has become the biggest public film festival in Scandinavia. Each year, some 450 films from about 90 countries are screened, and the festival registers 160 000 admissions. It is also the primary networking platform for the film industry of the Nordic countries. All through the festival week 1 800 accredited producers, commissioners, directors, screenwriters and other industry experts attend the festival.
The festival programs two international competitions:
- The Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award is open for narrative or documentary features by first and second time directors.
- The International competition – Dragon Award for Best International Film. This section presents films that have already been loved and awarded at other festivals as well as new discoveries.
In 2021, one Canadian feature was selected in the festival: Night of the Kings (Philippe Lacôte), and two shorts: Cnfnmnt e/scp(i)sm (Denis Côté) and We Are in This Apart (Yung Chang).
Telefilm Canada recognizes a FEATURE FILM selection in this festival and may provide assistance through the International Promotion Program.
