The festival programs several competitions and awards cash prizes. SIFF Official Competition celebrates some of the year’s most accomplished films. Both the New Directors Competition, which features a selection debut or second features, and the Documentary Film Competition, present films without US distribution at the time of selection.

The Short Film Competition selects 150 films and awards three cash prizes of $2,500 each in the categories of Live Action, Animation, and Documentary. SIFF is an Academy Award® qualifier in all three short film categories.

SIFF also invite films in its numerous non-competitive sections, notably:  Alternate Cinema, World Cinema, Culinary Cinema, Documentary Films, Episodic Content (webisodes and serial storytelling), Face the Music (music documentaries).

Telefilm Canada recognizes the selection for a feature film at this festival as part of its Success Index and may provide financial support through the International Festival Participation Program.
