ABOUT

The Donostia-San Sebastián International Film Festival is Spain’s leading film festival specializing in feature-length narrative films. Its primordial role is to showcase the year’s most disquieting and innovative films.

The festival boasts many awards and some monetary prizes. Last year, the festival attracted more than 150,000 spectators and presented around 200 films in the different categories.

Among the most important are:

  • The Official Competition presents films that have not yet competed in other international festivals.
  • Zabaltegi-Tabakalera is a competitive section with a cash award of €20,000, open to the most varied, surprising and attractive film proposals of the year.
  • New Directors is a competitive showcase with first or second festure films, with a cash award, the Kutxa–New Directors Award, of €50,000 to be shared between the director and Spanish distributor.
  • Perla (”Pearls”) presents a selection of the best films shown at festivals during the year and the Audience Award comes with €50,000.
  • Culinary Cinema is a non-competitive, gastronomy-related films section accompanied by themed dinners.

Canadian films programmed at San Sebastián: LE BRUIT DES MOTEURS (New Directors), IL PLEUVAIT DES OISEAUX (Official Competition), RÉPERTOIRE DES VILLES DISPARUES, THE SONG OF NAMES (2019); GENÈSE (2018); LES DÉMONS (Competition 2015); FÉLIX ET MEIRA (2014 Official Competition); TAKE THIS WALTZ (2011 Official Competition); BARNEY’S VERSION (Audience Award Pearls Section), MY WINNIPEG (Thematic retrospective) (2010); MAMAN EST CHEZ LE COIFFEUR (Official Competition), DERRIÈRE MOI (New Directors) (2008); and EASTERN PROMISES (2007 Official Competition).
