About

Founded by Robert Redford in 1985, the Sundance Film Festival is organized by the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization that actively advances the work of independent storytellers in film. The festival showcases 60 shorts under three competitive categories: fiction, non-fiction and animation. The 2023 Festival should take place in person.

The following prizes and awards are bestowed on short films that exemplify outstanding vision and creativity in their respective categories: Grand Jury Prize*, Jury Award: International Fiction*, Jury Award: Nonfiction, Jury Award: Animation*, Special Jury Awards as well as The Sundance Institute – NHK Award.

Winners of the * categories qualify for the Oscars®.

Each year, Canada stands out with an average selection of 5 short films and regularly wins awards.

Telefilm Canada recognizes the selection of a short film in the Festival for application to its International Promotion Program.
