About the festival

Since 1979, the International Women’s Film Festival has been defending the cinema of women directors from around the world. Fighting against all forms of discrimination, race, gender, culture, social class, it assumes its double heritage towards feminism and cultural action, by placing the questioning of the image and the modes of representations at the centre of its reflections.

The festival aims to promote films directed by women on subjects of their choice, and to allow for better understanding of the situation and evolution of women and their cinema in each country represented. For the last 44 years the festival has gone out worldwide to discover new filmmakers, their films and to showcase their efforts, support their projects, help develop their creativity.

The festival offers several in competition and out-of-competition categories. The selection committee reserves the right to choose the category in which a film is programmed.

Telefilm Canada recognizes selection of a feature film as part of its International Promotion Program.
