RDVCANADA | Meet the Animations 2022

Telefilm Canada, in collaboration with the Canada Media Fund and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, is now accepting applications from Canadian production companies specializing in animation (feature film or television format) who would like to take part in a new initiative, RDVCANADA | Meet the Animations 2022.

This initiative will enable a maximum of five producers, representing a production company, to benefit from exclusive and personalized guidance (professional mentorship – pitch, presentation tools, strategy, networking, B2B meetings, etc.) and provide an opportunity for them to participate in an official Pitch session during in the International Animation Film Market (MIFA) that will take place in France and online from June 13 to 18, 2022.

 

Eligibility Requirements for Applicants and Projects

To be eligible, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

  • be a Canadian controlled corporation, as determined under sections 26 to 28 of the Investment Canada Act;
  • be represented during the initiative by a producer that is a Canadian citizen within the definition of the Citizenship Act or a permanent resident within the definition of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
  • have its head office in Canada and carry out its activities in Canada;
  • operate as an audiovisual production company;
  • have produced at least two animation projects distributed in theaters, broadcasted on a platform, conventional television station or selected in a festival;
  • have an feature film or television animation project in the development stage meant primarily for the television market (one-off or series) that could become a European co-production or intended for sale internationally;
  • hold financial and creative control of the presented project, together with all copyrights and options necessary for its development and exploitation;
  • must be available to participate in the International Animation Film Market (Annecy, France from June 13 to 18, 2022) in person.

 

Obligations of the selected participants
  • satisfy the following participant obligations;
    • Each selected participant must:
      1. Get accredited to International Animation Film Market (MIFA);
      2. Provide the information about their company and their projects to the experts in order to set up the most accurate support;
      3. Commit to answering any questions or surveys throughout the initiative and at the time of its finalization in order to best evaluate the results of the initiative.
  • be available to participate events related to the Activity;
  • cover all costs related to their participation in the Activity, including all travel costs (if required).

 

Selection Criteria

Telefilm Canada will select up to 5 applicants to participate in this initiative. Decision-making will be based on qualitative information in order to select the projects with the best potential to eventually (i) be produced as international treaty coproductions between Canada and other foreign countries, and/or (ii) be sold in international markets. The following criteria will serve as a guide, and no specific weighting will be attributed to each of the components:

  • Track record of the applicant production company;
  • Track record of the creative team;
  • Creative elements of the project, including originality and quality of the synopsis;
  • Strategic International plan for project presented; and
  • The Applicant’s objectives for participating in the initiative.

Selection Process

The selection process will be conducted by Telefilm Canada and may take into account, among other things, recommendations made by the Canada Media Fund and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.

It is possible that applicants may be required to participate in a conference call with the jury the week of March 14, 2022.

Moreover, decision-making will take into consideration Telefilm Canada’s objective to foster a diversity of voices in the audiovisual industry. As such, Telefilm Canada may prioritize applications from certain regions of Canada or applications made by applicants where the company and/or its related parties are majority owned and controlled by persons identifying themselves as members of the following under-represented groups: Indigenous peoples, official language minority communities, women, LGBTQ2+, racialized communities and persons with disabilities.

Decisions will be rendered by Telefilm around March 23, 2022.
