Talent to Watch program

**Updated Guidelines and program details for Talent to Watch program will be posted shortly**

This program supports the development, production, digital distribution, and the promotion of a first feature film or web content project.

Who can apply

The Talent Fund-supported Talent to Watch Program (formerly Micro-Budget Production Program) finances emerging content creators who are recent graduates of a partner university or active members of partner cooperatives. The program aims to stimulate the use of new digital distribution platforms and to allow emerging talent to develop an expertise in digital marketing and promotion.

Overview of the program

All projects submitted under this program will be evaluated through the lens of reaching Telefilm’s objective of obtaining a representative and diversified feature film portfolio that better reflects gender, cultural diversity and Canada’s Indigenous communities. The first step in attaining this objective will be to prioritize projects directed or written by women to ensure that we reach our 2020 goal of a portfolio that reflects gender parity while continuing to champion and support the works of Indigenous creators and members of communities representing Canada’s cultural diversity.

The program is comprised of three different components:

  • Main component
  • Indigenous component
  • Official-Language Minority Communities (OLMC) component

There is a two-stage application process:

  • prospective creative teams, with their project, must apply to one of the designated partners for this program (see lists below)
  • Telefilm will then issue a letter of invitation to the selected projects who will advance to the application stage

Overview of eligibility requirements

  • To be eligible to apply, Telefilm must first receive a recommendation from one of the selected partners
  • Key members of the recommended project’s creative team (producer, writer and director) must be recent alumni from one of the partner’s production programs or active members of the partner’s film cooperative
  • Key members of all recommended projects must be emerging talent:
    • they must already have produced, directed and/or written at least one short film (i.e. 30 minutes or less) but must not have produced, directed or written a feature length film (i.e. 75 minutes or more)

Please consult the guidelines for specific eligibility requirements.
