Telefilm Canada-financed dark comedy Cottage Country, starring Tyler Labine and Malin Akerman, wraps up shooting

Film funder invests $2.6 million in production funding

Montreal, November 16, 2011 – Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce that it has injected $2.6 million in production financing, through its Canada Feature Film Fund, into Peter Wellington’s (Slings & Arrows, Luck, Joe’s So Mean to Josephine) feature Cottage Country. Principal photography recently wrapped up in rural Muskoka, Ontario. The film stars Tyler Labine (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), Malin Akerman (Watchmen, The Proposal, The Bang Bang Club, Couples Retreat) and Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher, Dinner for Schmucks, Hot Fuzz).

Cottage Country, an exceptionally dark comedy that puts a uniquely Canadian sense of humour on full display, demonstrates that our cinema can – and does – shake up genre conventions,” said Carolle Brabant, Telefilm’s Executive Director. “We’re happy to support the latest from Peter Wellington, a prolific, multi-talented film and TV talent who is best known for the film Joe’s So Mean to Josephine, for which he won the Claude Jutra Award in 1996.”

Todd (Labine) wants everything to be just perfect at the family cottage where he plans to propose to Cammie (Akerman). But things go awry with the arrival of Todd’s slacker brother Salinger (Petronijevic) and his free-spirited girlfriend Masha (Punch). When Todd accidently dispatches his irksome sibling with an axe, Cammie is determined not to let murder stand in the way of their happiness.

Whizbang Films’ Cottage Country was scripted by Jeremy Boxen (Lost Girl, Endgame, Republic of Doyle, Warriors of Terra) and is produced by Frank Siracusa (Breakaway, Hobo With A Shotgun, Passchendaele) with Paul Gross (Passchendaele, Men With Brooms) and Frank Siracusaserving as executive producers. Canadian distribution will be handled by Alliance Films with a release slated for 2012.
