Canada set to make waves on La Croisette
Montreal, April 23, 2014—On the heels of last week’s historic moment in which the Cannes Film Festival announced David Cronenberg’s MAPS TO THE STARS (sales agent: eOne Films International), Atom Egoyan’s THE CAPTIVE (sales agent: eOne Films International) and Xavier Dolan’s MOMMY (sales agent: Seville International) will all screen in Competition in Cannes, Telefilm Canada proudly announces additional Canadian films and filmmakers set to make waves in Cannes.
“From our Masters to the next generation of filmmakers, Canada is being celebrated on the Croisette this year; we have the world’s attention,” said Carolle Brabant, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada. “This momentous year is not only a terrific showcase for the selected Canadian films and talent but also for Canadian creativity as a whole.”
Stéphane Lafleur’s TU DORS NICOLE (sales agent: Seville International) will premiere as part of the 2014 Director’s Fortnight. Starring Marc-André Grondin (GOON, C.R.A.Z.Y.), Francis La Haye (EN TERRAINS CONNUS, L’AFFAIRE DUMONT), and Julianne Côté (SARAH PREFÈRE LA COURSE, LE RING), the film is produced by Oscar nominees Kim McCraw and Luc Déry (GABRIELLE, MONSIEUR LAZHAR, INCENDIES).
Additionally, two Canadian short films will screen during the Cannes Film Festival. PETIT FRÈRE by Rémi St-Michel will premiere as part of the International Critics’ Week, and Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre’s JUTRA, coproduced by MJSTP Films and the National Film Board, will premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight. Both filmmakers will be in attendance.
The Cinéfondation’s Atelier hosts its 10th edition this year and invites 15 directors and their producers whose projects have been considered particularly promising to the Festival. This year the Festival has selected two Canadian teams to participate: director Guy Édoin (his debut feature MARÉCAGES screened in Venice’s Critics’ Week) and his producer Félize Frappier of Max Films, with VILLE-MARIE, as well as filmmaker Igor Drljaca with his Bosnia-produced project TABIJA, which won the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award for the best CineMart 2014 project with a European co-producer. The Atelier provides its participants with access to international co-producers, thereby accelerating the film’s completion.
Filmmaker Bruce LaBruce will preside as Jury president for the 5th edition of Queer Palm, an out of competition category that celebrates the best in LGBT filmmaking. In 2012, the jury honoured Xavier Dolan’s LAURENCE ANYWAYS. Bruce LaBruce’s latest film GERONTOPHILIA opened in France on March 26.
