Official statement by Carolle Brabant on the passing of Paul Almond
“The recognition that our cinema currently enjoys was built on decades of talent, commitment and passion. It’s important to remember this as we mourn the death of director, writer and producer Paul Almond. Starting with his very first films, in the 1960s and 1970s, Paul Almond wanted to be involved in the creation of a truly independent Canadian film industry. Films such as Isabel, Act of the Heart and Journey testify to his unique contribution to this collective dream. He remained deeply attached to the land of his forefathers, Quebec’s Gaspé region, which inspired several of his novels. Recently, in February, we had the pleasure of welcoming Paul to Canada Stars in Awards Season, an annual event held in Los Angeles to celebrate homegrown talent on the international scene. His name will not be forgotten. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
