Telefilm presents Guy Maddin in Berlin

17 February 2011

Montréal, February 17, 2011 – The conference call that Telefilm Canada organized this afternoon with influential film industry player Guy Maddin, speaking from Berlin, went off with great success. The purpose of the call was to highlight Mr. Maddin’s participation in the Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, where he is a member of the festival’s official jury.

A renowned director who has achieved international success with his unique films, Guy Maddin, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, engaged in a discussion with reporters and took their questions. Mr. Maddin told reporters that “to serve as a member of the Official Jury is a role that is extremely rewarding and deeply fulfilling. I think everyone should be forced to serve on a jury at some point in their lives.”  He went on to say that “for the first time, I can fully enjoy other filmmakers’ work, which is a privilege. I have been deeply impressed by not only the films so far, but how fair the jury wants to be.”

“It’s a real honour for us to work with Guy Maddin, whose film style is absolutely unique,” said Carolle Brabant, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada. “Guy produces high-quality work that touches audiences around the world. He is a true ambassador for our film industry and we are proud that his talent is recognized at such large-scale and important festivals as the Berlinale.”

The festival, a major cultural event for the international film industry, is marking its 61st edition. The last time that a Canadian sat on the festival’s official jury was in 2003, when Atom Egoyan served as jury president. During his three-decade-long career, Guy Maddin has made a total of 38 shorts and feature films. His most recent work, Hauntings I (Fragments) & Hauntings II, will be screened several times during the festival.
