Official statement from Carolle Brabant, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada, on the passing of Gil Cardinal
“We’re saddened to learn of the passing of Métis filmmaker, director and writer Gil Cardinal. Canada has lost a truly remarkable storyteller.
“Gil was a trailblazer. He was one of the first Aboriginal filmmakers to direct mainstream, big-budget productions in Canada, and was among the first to reach audiences worldwide.
“Among his many achievements, Gil produced hard-hitting documentaries with the National Film Board of Canada, including the very personal Foster Child. He was awarded the Gemini for best direction for a documentary program in 1988, and Foster Child remains one of the most internationally acclaimed works by a Canadian Aboriginal filmmaker.
“Gil also directed several dramas for the CBC, including the mini-series Big Bear, for which he was nominated for a second Gemini, and several episodes of the award-winning North of 60.
“Thank you Gil for your enormous contribution to Indigenous, Albertan and Canadian cinema.
“On behalf of everyone at Telefilm Canada, condolences and prayers to his family, friends and community.”
