Telefilm Canada drives Canadian business opportunities at 61st edition of the Berlin International Film Festival
Montréal, January 26, 2011 – Telefilm Canada is delighted to be front and centre at this year’s Berlinale and European Film Market with the Canada Sales Desk and Perspective Canada.
Committed to fostering creative and business partnerships and increasing international sales, the Canada Sales Desk will play host to 8 distributors, up from 5 in 2010, in the newly expanded space: Arrow Entertainment, Bogeydom Licensing, Delphis Films, eOne Films International, Forward Motion, Horizon Motion Pictures, Joker Films and Raven Banner can be found under one banner. This unique space serves as an efficient business centre for Canadian industry professionals, while providing a supportive environment for sales and networking. In 2009, our clients reported more than $12M of sales and presales completed or worth of sales and presales likely to occur as a result of discussions initiated at the European Film Market.
“The European Film Market has emerged as one of the most important markets for sales of theatrically driven prestige movies,” stated Charlotte Mickie, Executive Vice-President of Entertainment One International. “Our presence is essential and it’s a wonderful place to showcase our movies. Support from Telefilm has been instrumental in our success at Berlin over the past years. We’re looking forward to a bright future together in Berlin this year and for many more to come.”
Also, the fifth edition of Perspective Canada at Berlin will take place during the European Film Market that runs concurrently to the Berlinale. The screening program maximizes the exposure for Canadian feature length films while shining the spotlight on Canadian companies, films and on-screen talent for the international film community in Berlin, including close to 6,500 acquisitions representatives accredited at the Market.
“In 2010 we introduced the biggest grossing French-language film Father and Guns as part of Perspective Canada in Berlin. This year, in the same section, we are presenting The Bait; an action comedy directed by Yves Simoneau and produced by our sister company Cirrus,” said Xiaojuan Zhou of Delphis Film. “We consider our participation in Berlin important as it is the first major film market at the beginning of the year that could help us catch up with the industry and set up our annual strategy in terms of our movie acquisitions and sales activities.”
