Telefilm Canada enthusiastically welcomes the funding allocated to support the recovery and reopening of the arts and culture sector

28 June 2021

Telefilm Canada enthusiastically welcomes today’s announcement of the Recovery Fund for Arts, Culture, Heritage and Sport Sectors, which will inject $300M over two years, as well as the Reopening Fund, which will further inject $200M over two years.

Telefilm Canada will administer $25M over two years to support exhibitors across the country to recover and resume pre-pandemic level of activities. Up to $16M of Recovery funds will be allocated to the Theatrical Exhibition Program, and another $9M will be allocated towards complimentary promotional initiatives to encourage Canadian audiences back to cinemas. Telefilm will allocate an additional $10M in Reopening funds to film festivals across the country through the Promotion Program.

“Local cinemas and film festivals across the country have been especially hard hit by shutdowns over the last year-and-a-half,” says Christa Dickenson, Executive Director and CEO, Telefilm Canada. “They have always been central to bringing communities together, and to ensuring Canadians discover and watch their homegrown cinema. They are also an integral piece in the screen-based sector’s recovery, and we are grateful to The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage for his continued support during this critical period.”

Details and updated program guidelines will follow later this summer, and both programs will start to distribute the funds this fall.
